Top 10 SEO Tips
Whether you’re starting from scratch with a new website, or trying to squeeze better positions in the SERPS out of an older project, getting the basics right is essential if you want to enjoy top positions in the main search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN.
1 Check out the competition
Have a look at who your competitors are, and examine what they do to get high rankings.
2 Titles
Start at the top of the page with a title that clearly lets your user know what the page is about.
3 Description
When your page ranks for its main keyword, the search engines will generally use your page description as a snippet. Make sure it is appealing to users and includes the keywords used in your title.
4 Content
The body of your page needs to include the keywords that you are targeting, as well as related terms, and be original rather than just copied from another site.
5 Correct HTML
Although having a W3C validation stamp on your page won’t automatically give you a boost in the rankings, the fact that your html is fully compliant means that the search engine spiders can properly index your content.
6 Backlinks
Get a variety of backlinks from relevant websites including directories, and blogs.
7 Freshness
Regularly update the content on your page to keep the spiders coming back.
8 Be Patient
It can take a while for changes you make to have an impact on your rankings, so don’t panic if you aren’t number 1 instantly.
9 Analyse and Improve
Keep track of as many different metrics as possible including what people who came to your site were searching for, and how they behaved, then experiment to keep them longer or improve your sales performance.
10 Keep on top
Remember, getting to Number 1 is the easy part, as soon as you’re there, everyone else will be doing everything they can to get your position.
